Introduction to the STEP Leadership Programme
The Sustainability Leadership in the Built Environment Programme is a partnership between the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) and the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL).
The STEP Leadership programme aims to create a network of influential leaders that work collaboratively to drive transformational change. By convening senior executives from all parts of the built environment sector, leaders will be supported in transforming their organisational strategies towards clear sustainability outcomes, and by breaking the cycle of blame, will be prepared to re-shape the industry to effectively deliver against them.
Impacts on individual companies will be strengthened by ongoing learning support and the development of customised seminars for individual companies that wish to take a lead.
Impacts on the wider built environment will be enhanced by encouraging the formation of new leadership groups that tackle strategic and systemic challenges faced by industry.
Who should attend the course?
The Programme is specifically designed for senior directors and managers, decision makers, and leaders from all organisations for whom the built environment is important.
This will include: central governments; city governments; local & regional authorities; development agencies; the finance and investment community; design professionals; service and equipment providers; utilities and infrastructure; transportation; building-user groups; academic
and research organisations; professional bodies and institutes.

The Programme
The Impact of the Built Environment
The built environment has a great influence over our daily lives, from our homes to our places of work, learning and leisure. As such, buildings have such a significant impact on the environment. In the UK, buildings are responsible for 43% of our total carbon emissions and they also impact on the production of waste and the consumption of water, timber and other materials.
The built environment sector has the opportunity to be at the forefront of finding solutions to the many of the urgent sustainable challenges. Whilst to date the focus has been primarily on tackling the problem of climate change, the increasing interest in sustainable cities and pan-sector solutions reflects the potential to provide spaces which are not only environmentally sustainable, but also have important positive social and economic effects.
Sustainability Leadership in the Built Environment Programme
The Sustainability Leadership in the Built Environment Programme is offered as a two-part programme
• A high-impact 48-hour residential seminar;
• A single ½ day follow-up session to explore:
◦ How participants have progressed with commitments they have made during the seminar;
◦ What they have learnt since the seminar.
Learning and Teaching Methods
The Programme will combine academic and practitioner inputs on the critical sustainability challenges for the sector. Contributors will be drawn from the relevant areas of the University of Cambridge, from those closely associated with the sector and from the CPSL network of leading thinkers and practitioners from around the world. A rich mixture of expert input and commentary will be blended with both plenary and facilitated, small group discussions thereby ensuring both increased understanding and peer-to-peer learning.
The content will take participants from a view of the global system pressures and trends which provide the context for sustainable development to the specific implications, challenges and opportunities for those working in the built environment. Case studies from both within and outside the sector will be used to illustrate the strategies which have resulted in individual and collective business change.
Arising from the seminar, UK-GBC and CPSL will encourage the formation of new action groups to tackle strategic and systemic challenges faced by the built environment sector to ensure a greater long-term impact.
We will also develop ongoing learning support and customised seminars to support executives in working with their own organisations and strengthen the impact for individual companies that wish to take a lead.
Learning Approach
The Programme has been designed to be highly intensive and participatory, offering the maximum opportunity for dialogue, debate and analysis. Modules are designed to provide a challenging and inspiring learning environment for participants who will be exposed to a wide range of perspectives on the challenges of sustainability and strategic responses.
Small Group Learning
Approximately 25 delegates are accepted on to each programme, representing corporate and public sectors.The size of the group allows for maximum participation and sharing of ideas and experiences in a classroom-style setting guided by expert facilitators.
Dialogue and Debate
Our learning approach is based around dialogue and debate enriched by expert contributions from leading thinkers and practitioners in the field. Small syndicate groups, each facilitated by a member of the Core Faculty, allow delegates to deepen their understanding of the issues and explore the implications for themselves and their organisations.
Learning from Others
Time is specifically incorporated into the Programme to allow informal networking and a sharing of ideas, drawing on the extensive level of expertise and experience of the delegates themselves as well as contributors.
