For Introduction to Sustainability in the Built Environment Course
For how long will I be able to access my online account?
From the day you start the course your account can be accessed for a period of 2 weeks. Under normal circumstances it will be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. After this period your account will expire.
How long will it take me to complete the course?
The course is designed for 8 hours of online learning. This is based on an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, as well as statistics from previous experience. Please be aware that for some people it may take longer to complete the course. Likewise, some delegates may be able to work through the modules faster.
What happens if I am not able to finish the course within 2 weeks?
You won’t be able to access your online account as soon as the 2 week period expires. Please therefore make sure you have at least 8 hours available within these two weeks to complete the course. To allow enough time for completion, please also see “How much time will it take me to complete the course?”
How many times can I log in?
You are able to log in as many times as you want during the 2 week period to complete the course.
When will I receive my login details?
Your login details will be sent to you via email on the Friday before your course start date.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD). Is the course CPD accredited?
Yes, completion of the course equates to 8 hours of CPD.
Will there be an assessment?
Yes, participants will take an online assessment at the end of the course. The test is comprised of randomly chosen multiple choice questions.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes, after completion of the online assessment delegates will have the opportunity to print and/or download a certificate of achievement. This will be sent via email approximately one week after completion of the course.
How many modules and how much time will I need on average to go through them?
There are five modules that comprise the course, each of approximately one and a half hours duration. We recommend that you set aside enough time to study complete modules in a study session.
Will I have a Course Tutor?
This is primarily an online course designed for independent study. The course does include a discussion forum which will be periodically moderated by CEM’s Sustainability tutors.
Can I change the start date?

Please note it is only possible to switch course dates up to one week prior to your original start date and alternative dates are subject to availability.
Can I apply for a refund if I am unable to take the course once I have booked?
Refunds will not generally be available because a two week period is considered sufficient for completion of the course.
What IT equipment will I require?
- A PC or Mac
- Broadband internet connection (minimum 2kbps download speed and 300kbps upload speed)
- Internet browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+, Safari or Firefox)
- Flash 10+
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Audio
Please Note: Employers may operate policies limiting access to the internet and use of email at work. If you intend studying during the working week using your employer’s equipment you should check that access is possible and is permitted within your employer’s IT Acceptable Use policy.
The bottom of a course animation doesn't appear on the screen. What can I do?
- 1. Your web browser will allow you to zoom out or in making the content shrink or grow using Ctrl,- and Ctrl,+ on your keyboard. This will enable you to see the controls missing from the screen, but the content will shrink as well.
- 2. This solution is more drastic as it will affect the whole Windows system. This solution is to set the screen resolution to a setting of 1024x768 or higher. This is more involved process and can only reversed using the same steps.

Will IT support be provided?
Yes. IT support staff will be available during UK work hours (9am to 5pm) to deal with technical issues. Contact details are accessible within the Help section of the Virtual Learning Environment.
